1972
February   the band travel to Europe to play at the "Grand Gala Du Disque", a Dutch TV special on
  the 24th.
March   Carl announces in the UK rock press that the Smile tapes have been located and will be
assembled (and overdubbed where necessary) for a fall release.
April   Nick Grillo is dismissed, and Jack Rieley assumes personal managerial duties. Steve
Love becomes the band's business manager. Grillo sues the band to recover monies
loaned and unpaid fees, a case which he reportedly wins. During sessions for the
upcoming album Bruce Johnston decides to leave the band, having grown dissatisfied
  with Rieley's style of management.
May   "You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone/Cuddle Up" single also fails to chart. Parent
album Carl And The Passions - So Tough is released in tandem with Pet Sounds, a move
that provokes unfavorable comparison with the 1966 album and may well have had a
hand in the set stalling at #50. The second Spring 45, "Good Time/Sweet Mountain", is
  released.
June   At Jack Rieley's instigation, the group, including Brian and recording console, return to
the Netherlands for the summer, to record and use as a base for their European tour
(except Dennis, who makes the Canary Islands his base and flies in for sessions). In
reality, little more than basic tracks are recorded in Holland and much additional work is
required on returning to California. "Marcella/Hold On, Dear Brother" single continues
  the run of chart misses.
July   Spring, an album by former Honeys Marilyn Wilson & Diane Rovell produced by Brian,
Steve Desper & David Sandler, is released to critical acclaim and zero chart action.
September   After the band returns from Holland, Rieley decides to remain there and manage the band
  long distance.
December   Dennis & Barbara's second child, Carl Benton, is born on the 31st.
